In his Hot Seat, Khalid talks about using an outreach method called “Pitch In Public” to get the attention of potential clients.
Khalid was able to land so many ghostwriting deals by using this method. Here’s why it’s so effective as an outreach method:
- You stand out from 99% of other ghostwriters. How often do you see this kind of outreach? Probably never. So when your potential client sees you doing it, they sit up and take notice. All business owners want to know how they could be doing better, and by doing it publicly, you’re drawing attention to yourself, your expertise, and how you can help your potential client.
- It catches the attention of other people. Khalid didn’t land every single client he Pitched In Public. But all of his PIP attracted the attention of other people in the space, and helped him land sales calls with them (and some of them turned into paying clients). This is the power of pitching in public—you don’t know who’s timeline you might end up in.
And before we go any further, we always here this objection about Pitches In Public:
“But Cole, you’re publicly telling someone why their business sucks. They’ll hate me after this and will never want to work with me!”
Nothing can be further from the truth.
Business owners want to know how they could be doing better. They want to be shown their blind spots. They want to get the help of experts (hint: you are that expert). They will be thankful for pointing out what they’re doing wrong (as Khalid’s experience shows!).
Here’s one of Khalid’s PIP for you to take a look at:

Now, let’s dive into how you can create one of these for yourself.
Step 1: Identify The Problem
The Pitch In Public process starts the same as any other pitching process:
Find out the problem your potential client is having (a problem your service can solve).
Here are some examples:
- If you ghostwrite X content, take a look at your potential client’s last 25 tweets and figure out what they could be doing better to increase their reach
- If you ghostwrite newsletters, sign up to the potential client’s newsletter and work out what they could be doing better (formatting, content, CTAs, subject lines, etc)
- If you ghostwrite Educational Email Courses, go through your potential client’s funnel. What could they improve? Where are they leaking cash?
Make tons of notes and get ready to pitch!
